Emergency Contraceptive Pills (ECPs) Training for Pharmacists

Important Note: The content of this module may be affected by revisions to the Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC) for Contraceptive Eligibility being released soon by the World Health Organization. The Training Resource Package team will be working to update the content of this module in the coming months. This module is designed to be used by clinical trainers and pre-service educators with a thorough understanding of adult learning principles and the ability to provide clinical training on FP topics in pre-service or in-service settings.

Designed to actively involve the trainees in the learning process, sessions include the following components:

  • a session plan
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • simulation skills practice in the form of role plays
  • discussions
  • skills practice using objective competency-based skills checklists

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, trainees should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe the characteristics of levonorgestrel (LNG) emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) in a manner that customers can understand:
    • What LNG ECPs are and how they work (mechanism of action)
    • Effectiveness
    • Side effects
    • Safety
    • Possible precautions or complications
    • ECP regimens
  2. Discuss legal framework for ECPs in your country
  3. Describe the indications for use of ECPs
  4. Demonstrate how to screen customers for ECP use
  5. Demonstrate how to inform ECP customers about the following issues:
    • Characteristics of LNG ECPs
    • How to use LNG ECPs
    • Possible side effects of LNG ECPs and how to manage them
    • The importance of using a barrier method if needed and/or starting regular contraceptives after ECP use
